Another court ruling confirms the legality of the SAO’s proceedings

Today, the Budapest-Capital Regional Court ruled in a new judgment that the State Audit Office of Hungary (SAO) had lawfully and justifiably concluded in its report that the opposition coalition parties had accepted illegal funding of HUF 261.26 million, originating from abroad, from the ‘Mindenki Magyarországa Mozgalom’ (Everyone’s Hungary Movement, MMM) during the 2022 election campaign.

This time, the lawsuit was filed by the Movement for a Better Hungary (Jobbik) against the Hungarian State Treasury, during which they also requested a judicial review of the SAO report. In its fourth judgment, the court found that the Hungarian State Treasury had acted lawfully on the basis of the audits conducted by the SAO on party financing, and the justification stated that the SAO’s findings were lawful and well-founded.

The court again analysed the SAO’s report in detail and reaffirmed that the SAO had acted lawfully in carrying out the audit within the scope of its remit, its findings were factually justified, and it was lawful to conclude that the parties of the opposition coalition had received illegal in-kind asset contributions during the 2022 parliamentary election campaign.
