Dr. László Windisch, President of the State Audit Office of Hungary (SAO Hungary), received Mr. Ivica Gavrilović, the recently appointed President and Auditor General of the State Audit Institution of the Republic of Serbia (SAI Serbia), at his office on 30 July 2025. During the introductory visit, the two leaders discussed the current challenges faced by the supreme audit institutions and shared their experience in auditing construction projects and the navigability of the Danube.

The annual national conference of the Hungarian Hydrological Society was held in Székesfehérvár between 2 and 4 July 2025, to which the State Audit Office of Hungary was invited for the first time. At the opening plenary session of the professional event, Dr. László Windisch, President of the State Audit Office of Hungary, gave a presentation entitled ‘Water management and water affairs – experience of SAO.

More work to be done to prevent and reduce industrial water pollution

In its recent report, the State Audit Office of Hungary made recommendations among others for amendments to legislation promoting the prevention and reduction of industrial water pollution, measures to improve the effectiveness of management, control and supervisory activities.

Another court ruling confirms the legality of the SAO’s proceedings

The Budapest-Capital Regional Court ruled in a new judgment that the State Audit Office of Hungary (SAO) had lawfully and justifiably concluded in its report that the opposition coalition parties had accepted illegal funding of HUF 261.26 million, originating from abroad, from the ‘Mindenki Magyarországa Mozgalom’ (Everyone’s Hungary Movement, MMM) during the 2022 election campaign.

Efficient use of our water resources can boost the competitiveness of agriculture

This year the State Audit Office of Hungary (SAO) is continuing its audits on the protection of domestic waters. In its latest audit on the subject, the SAO assessed the complex system of agricultural water management and the sustainability of agricultural water use for the years 2019-2023. The audit found that progress has been made in the efficient use of water resources, but that further improvements are needed, particularly in view of the consequences of climate change on water resources.
